Mummified rat returned to Egypt

A rare rat sarcophagus from the Ptolemaic period is to be displayed in the Egyptian Museum reports Ahram Online.

For 15 years the sarcophagus and mummified animal has been on view at the Egyptian Museum in Leipzig in Germany.  The artefact was among items discovered by a Cairo University excavation at Tuna Al-Gabal.  In  1964, a German antiquities collector called Robert Schleicher bought it from an Amsterdam dealer.  It was offered to the museum in Leipzig some time later.  Doubts regarding the route out of Egypt were raised and Egyptian authorities called the Egyptian Cultural Bureau in Germany.  The documents confirmed that it belonged to Egypt and it was duly sent back.
