Today marks the 100th anniversary of the discovery of the bust of Queen Nerfertiti, wife of Akhenaten by the German archaeologist Ludwig Borchardt at Amarna in 1912. it has since been a key part of Berlin's Neues Museum since it was first put on display in 1923 and now features in a new exhibition entitled "In the Light of Amarna - 100 Years of the Nefertiti Discovery" which opens today. The show displays over 600 objects, many of which have been in storage for decades.
The bust has been subject to much debate over its more recent history in regard to the circumstances of its removal and whether it should be returned to Egypt. One thing is for sure though, having had the fortune to see the bust in Berlin a few years ago, it is truly magnificent and is as wonderful close-up as I could have imagined. If you ever get the chance to see it, you will not be disappointed!
The exhibition runs until 13 April 2013.
