Hopes that Downton Abbey can revive tourism
Can Downton Abbey save Egypt's tourism? - Daily Mail reports on a visit by Lord and Lady Carnarvon to Egypt at the invitation of the ministry of tourism 'in the hope of reviving the interest of visitors'.
Highclere, home of the Earl and Countess, houses an exhibition within the cellars of the house which includes over 60 replicas of items recovered from Tutankhamun's tomb together with a photographic archive, a replica of the 5th Earl's study and antiquities lent from British Museum and Newbury. The present Earl hopes that the recent interest in Highclere as a result of being featured in the popular series Downton Abbey, will inspire people to visit Egypt and in turn boost tourism to the country.
