Details of an exhibition opening at the Chiostro del Bramante in Rome called Cleopatra. The Magic of Egypt:
"From 10 October 2013 to 2 February 2014 Rome’s Chiostro del Bramante will be hosting a major exhibition focusing on the figure of Cleopatra (Alexandria, 69 B.C. - 30 B.C.). Ptolemaic Egypt, the fascinating life of Cleopatra, her influence on the political events of the era and the relationship between Rome and Egypt: all of this is explored in an exhibition that counts more than 200 works from leading national and international museums, such as the Capitoline Museums, the Vatican Museums, The British Museum in London, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Louvre in Paris and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
Curated by Giovanni Gentili, who previously curated the exhibition devoted to Julius Caesar, with the support of an important committee of experts, the exhibition Cleopatra. The Magic of Egypt is produced and organised by Arthemisia Group together with DART Chiostro del Bramante, with the collaboration of the Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities.
The exhibition presents aspects of ancient Egyptian culture inseparably linked to the environment of the river Nile, examining historical events that forged key relationships and gave rise to interests of various kinds between Rome and Ptolemaic Egypt.
The works on show form a stunning blend of art and history: precious sculptures in granite, basalt and schist from Egypt’s famous quarries, Greek and Carrara marble, alabaster, multicoloured mosaics and frescoes, bronzes, glazed terracotta, gold and silver, glass, ivory and gemstones produce a fascinating, kaleidoscopic picture of distant times and places."- Chiostro del Bramante
