A new exhibition is opening on 3 December 2013 at the Egyptian Art Special Exhibitions Gallery in New York. It celebrates America's sole obelisk, erected in 1881 in New York's Central Park - a gift to the City from the khedives of Egypt.
The timely display by the Metropolitan Museum comes as the Central Park Conservancy begins plans to carry out conservation work on the monument and will tell the story of the construction and symbolism of obelisks, from ancient times to present-day. The exhibition will include objects from the museum's Egyptian Art collection alongside artworks from other departments, textiles and photographs. A highlight of the exhibitions is to be a time-lapse video charting a day in the life of an obelisk.
Cleopatra's Needle runs until 8 June 2014. For more details on Cleopatra's Needle exhibit, click here
